PictureExample of a completed Ideagram.
One more big project has been handed in today; this takes us all one step closer to the end of the year. Even though there are 17 official days left to the end of this school year, in actual teaching days, we are down to 10 days where I have all students in the classroom together. With a few final pieces to complete it will take all our effort to stay focussed, complete homework, and check behaviours to ensure we end the year on a strong note. I have no hesitation saying that I am positive this group will do amazingly well.

PictureOur last session of hip hop lessons ended today. Next week - time to perform!
I think, actually I know, we are all feeling the pressure of the work load this week. It has been a very busy past couple of days and the students were feeling the crunch today as the deadline for the Ideagram project inched closer. Overall, the students were completely focussed and used their time well in class. Lots of cutting and pasting today as the creative side of their brains took over, As I chatted with some students, they admitted they were surprised by the amount of 'evidence' they have found and are including to demonstrate what they learned about persecution. So rewarding to be their teacher :).

Homework  - Do not spend hours on homework tonight - a little bit should suffice.
1) Lit Circles - Ideagram - if you are behind you will want to spend time working on this tonight - due Tuesday
2) Math - unit test tomorrow for both grades - study!
3) Family Fun Night - Gardening theme

PictureWorking as a team on a Socials station.
A more in-depth look into the lives of the Ancient Egyptian began today. Students were assigned groups and a specific topic with which to begin their studies. It did not take long for everyone to dive in.
The final assignment for the Literature Circles unit is well on its way.Students have found supporting evidence of the big idea and are beginning to move into the final, presentation stage. I can't wait to see the end results.

Western Day was a huge success at Hillcrest today. Thank you so much to the parents who served the entire school pancakes for breakfast. Also, a big thank you to Mrs. van Niekerk and her class for leading us in line dancing and helping to serve. What a great way to end the week and start a long weekend.

Homework

2) Math - see Thursday

4) Website comment - see below
5) Family Fun Night donation - gardening theme

Website Comment: We watched an incredibly powerful movie today called Freedom Writers. There were multiple themes running through the movie but for me the one about HOPE really stood out. Each of us made a connection in some way, had an aha moment, and even had a 'hum' moment, a moment or two that made you really stop think and wonder. In your comment today please share connection you made, an 'aha' moment, as well as a 'hum' moment. Remember to go beyond the minimal effort and be sure to use writer's mumble. In other words - do not rush this one!

                                           Have a great long weekend!

Hearing the many stories of those that survived the Holocaust was thought-provoking and emotional. At times, hearing our guest speaker share about her family's experience brought a sense of disbelief. When one student asked why she shares her stories she said, "We share because we want our children to remember the effects of racism, intolerance and anti-semitism and to never forget."

Comment: Two years after World War ll ended Canada allowed 1000 Jewish refugees into this country. When we think of all the Syrian refugees currently being welcomed in, 1000 seems a staggeringly low number. What do you think contributed to the decision of our Prime Minister to keep the numbers so low? Also, what was the biggest 'take away' for you today? Be sure to explain.
