It is starting to feel that the students are settling in and we are able to move forward. Division 1 had their first French class with Mademoiselle Dy and experienced their first official PE block.
This afternoon we took time out of our day to share our special items that were brought in. The variety of items that have deep meaning for the students was wonderful. From ballet shoes, to pictures of family, awards/medals and a script from a play - all allowed us insight to each other's lives.
Homework
1) Math - grade 6s worksheet
                                                                            - grade 7s - complete page 6 in textbook

So much to fit into a day that it seemed to go by so quickly. In Reading students started to discuss the differences within genres. Today was a focus on fantasy books - what makes fantasy a fantasy? A look at types of characters ignited the conversation and this will be continued tomorrow.
Everyone began their first math unit today. The grade 6s headed to Ms Wilson's class to learn about number concepts and the grade 7s stayed with me to discuss divisibility.
To end the day we played a game of Zap as a community builder. If you do not know your classmates names it is really hard to build the bonds necessary for a classroom community.
Homework
1) Math - grade 7s pg 6 #1,2, 4,5, 10, 11
2) Bring One special item - some did not have their item today so we will do this tomorrow.
Planner money - $5
Notices - lots and lots of notices
Grouse grind - please return ASAP (another was sent home today)

Book Orders - many to choose from

Comment: Watch the video below.  What struck you as important to remember and how might it connect to your life? What are the big rocks in your life? What are the pebbles? What is the sand?

PictureDay 1 of the reading program.
It was so great to begin to settle in for the new school year. We took some time to organize supplies and get to know one another a little better. We also started our reading program, which will be an important focus throughout the year. I am looking forward to working and learning with all the students of division 1.
IMPORTANT:
  • Bring all forms and money back ASAP! The gmail accounts need to be done for Monday.
  • Ask your parents if they want to volunteer for next Friday's field trip.
  • My new email for students is mrsmiddleton00@gmai
To bring for Monday:

1) All school supplies
2) One item that is special to you, maybe a special memory, maybe something that represents a passion you have, maybe an item that was given to you. Remember to put it in a bag that people cannot see it and don't tell anyone.
3) Inside shoes

Please write a comment as this will be a daily requirement this year as part of homework.
Remember to use your fictitious name when writing on-line.

Post a response:
What are you looking forward to this year? Please include three things and explain why. Remember that the world is reading what we write so edit for spelling and punctuation before you hit the publish button.

Hopefully we are able to place all the students in their classes tomorrow!  We are all looking forward to getting settled with our new students/teachers so that the learning can really take off!

Today, the students learned about the different body systems today.  They learned about the digestive system, the brain, the endocrine system, and internal organs.
In math, they continued to review their basic math facts.  They reviewed addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

To help in organizing various class activities, all students created name tags that will be used throughout the school year.  It was great to see that many students drew pictures on their cards that displayed their passions.

It has been a busy two days with the students getting a chance to meet with all the upper intermediate staff. Students worked hard on a reading assessment, math review and a map of the world. In the afternoon all the students completed the first portion of their fitness measurement.
I was extremely impressed with how well the students have done with the changing of the activities and the shifting of the teachers. It has been a great opportunity for the kids to connect and begin to build a sense of community and a wonderful way for staff to get to know the students better.
