So much amazing learning again today. Gathering evidence of our learning and putting this together on a portfolio helps us realize where we started and where we ended up. It is important for all (parents and students)  to recognize the learning that has taken place, the improvements that have been made rather than just judging by a final grade. The students of division one are embracing this and recognizing that the learning needs to be the focus, and needs to be celebrated! Students put together a compilation of their learning with our writing unit. They now each have evidence of where they have improved and where growth still needs to occur. Our Evernote sites have been great for this.
We also spent time today improving our Digital Stories on iMOvie. Yesterday we developed criteria and today students had a chance to improve their work. I am impressed with how much growth occurred in two days.
1) LA - respond to the question I post under 'Reflection of Learning'.
2) Continue to take photos for the imovies.
3) Socials  - bring an article to school that can be used to complete a summary sheet.
4) Those who have not created a new post in LA E-Portfolio with your fall write and the learning intentions please do so tonight. Many of your peers have completed this already so have a look at their LA section.

Upcoming Events
1) Bring your skating gear tomorrow. The rink is cold so be prepared and dress warmly (gloves are always a good idea). Helmets are mandatory.
2) Hat Day on Friday
3) Christmas Hamper Drive and Toonie drive - all to support the less fortunate families in Cloverdale.
4) Castle Fun Park Notices due next week - field trip date is Friday, Dec. 7
5) Hot Lunch notices

So happy to see the clay masks all dried after Friday's painting session.  We can't wait to display these out in the common area for all to see. Please go to the Sharing Our Learning page to see their photos. oday we had time to share what our names mean and why our parents chose the names they did. There are some very interesting stories that were shared.

It is that time of year again where the importance of giving to those less fortunate is at the top of our minds. The Think We team is sponsoring the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper drive again this year. A notice went home on Friday stating the items that are being collected. As a class we will be setting a goal for donations and we will start collecting items tomorrow. The drive will go until Dec. 6. In connection to the Christmas Hamper Drive, the PAC is sponsoring a toonie drive, collecting for those less fortunate in our area.
Another big event coming up on Wednesday is the planting of the tulip bulbs. The school purchased these bulbs to support the Surrey Memorial Hospital fund, as a way to make Hillcrest a more beautiful and greener space in our community. For the planting we would like those who can to bring in a pair of gardening gloves and a small hand shovel.

What a great way to start the day - helping our buddies create a Cinquain about Fall and teaching them how to use Book Creator on the iPads! We also finally were able to paint our clay masks today. Can't wait to see how they all turn out on Monday.
1) Journal #9 due on Sunday night.
2) Skating notice due on Tuesday

3) Add your Fall write to your e-portfolio. Copy and paste your write into a new post on the LA section. Add the Learning Intention: I can create a personal piece of writing that uses descriptive language to paint a portrait, starts with a strong leads and focuses on one main idea. ALso, add what you learned comment.
4) Check out on of your peers websites and add a comment to one of their pages - this could be a journal or something that has been uploaded to the e-portfolios.

5) Work on your website. Since there is very little homework this weekend all of you should spend some time ensuring your website is up to date. Check for pictures, learning intentions, blank pages.

6) Bring in any newspapers you have at home. We will need these for our current events focus next week.

Today we spent some time using criteria that was created in class yesterday to assess where we were in our learning. It is not only important to self assess where we are, but we also need to make plans for how we are going to improve. 2) Complete the following survey.
3) Skating notice went home today.
4) Journal #9 to be completed before Sunday evening.

Building criteria as a class is one way that students gain a clear understanding of expectations for an assignment. Using Todays Meet, the students used an example of a response written by a former student to brainstorm what is needed to write an excellent response. If you wish to see the twitter-like brainstorming click on the following link: Todays Meet.
This afternoon the school was entertained by a visiting Arts groups in the gym. It is always entertaining to see the arts in action.

1) Survey - please complete the technology survey tonight. Click on the link: Tech Survey . Please be as honest as you can. We need these results for tomorrow.
2) Math grade 7s - 31. and 3.2 worksheet; grade 6s - worksheet
3) PE - Thursday
4) Think about a journal topic for this week to publish - sorry that we have not had time in class yet for an assigned topic.
5) Have your response for Ivan at school for Thursday as you will be working on it.

Upcoming events to mark on your calendars:
Skating at Fleetwood Sports and Leisure Centre - Nov. 29, 1:15 - 2:15
Castle Fun Park - Term 1 Celebration trip - Dec. 7, 9:30 - 2:30

Students  learned how to read newspaper articles and pull out the 5 Ws today. This is the start of our current events unit we are covering in Socials over the next couple of weeks.
1) LA - Send a copy of your Fall write to your Evernote account before you make any changes. The doc you send needs to contain all the feedback I have given to you. Please see your gmail for instructions of how to move the doc to Evernote.
2) LA - revise your Fall write according to my feedback. Print off the revision, your final best work for Wednesday. Please email me if you need further clarification, or if you would like further feedback once you have revised.

One of the skills that is very important as a learner is to be able to assess our own work, as well as others. Giving feedback, that aids in the  learning of others, was a focus for Division 1 today. After discussion it was realized that if feedback does not help us improve than it is simply not worth the time. After some practise it was great to see the students begin to develop valuable feedback for their peers.
1) LA - revise Fall write, using the feedback from your peer. Send me your revision and state one area of feedback you would like me to focus on. Please have this in sometime before Sunday morning (10:00ish).
2) Science - open book quiz to be done first thing Monday morning.
3) Journal #8 to be published this weekend if you have not already done so.
4) Photography - we will continue to work on our iMovie on Monday. Be sure to have your photos to work with.

Today we continued with our Fall piece of writing by learning how to vary our sentences to create interest. We are almost ready to publish this assignment that focuses on descriptive language to create strong images. We also reviewed the concept of taxonomy and how living things are classified. Tomorrow will be the day to see if students can think critically about the similarities of humans and gorillas.
1) Fall write - type up and bring in for tomorrow. This can be on a google doc or a word doc and emailed through.
2) Math test tomorrow - Fractions unit test
3) Science - review notes and worksheets on the classification system. Please see links on the side bar under the title of Science for videos we have watched in class.
4) Please respond in the comments section of this blog - What is one similarity and one difference you have discovered between humans and gorillas?
