I continue to be impressed with our new group of grade 7s. I feel we are beginning to build a community where students feel respected amongst all member of the class and feel that they can share their thoughts and opinions openly. Today was a great example as we spent the afternoon focussing on the core competencies of communication and critical thinking. Students needed to determine what to take for survival if stranded alone on an island. Processing information was key in this section. Over the next stages students needed to communicate their thoughts - this meant not only speaking and giving strong reasons but hearing what others had to say. The latter was far more difficult for some but through practise this will improve.
This week's Language Arts focused on understanding genres in books. Reading is one of the biggest contributors to success and I love to support great readers. Knowing how to choose 'just right' books, as well as reading from a variety of genres are steps towards creating individuals who love to read.
Divisibility has been the focus in Math. Students have learned the divisibility rules for 2,5,10, 3 and 9. Some are beginning to see how easy it is to check on whether items can be divided up equally through the use of the rules.
Finally, I was able to introduce our Science unit on Chemistry. Our first learning intention, or goal, is to be able to describe matter. Students used their senses to describe a variety of items qualitatively. Next week we will continue with looking more closely at quantitative measures such as hardness, and elasticity.
Enjoy your long weekend.
