We are so lucky at Hillcrest to have a couple of gardens on our school grounds that have been planted by students and teachers. Maintaining a healthy garden is important for our school's ecosystem - a healthy garden means lots of critters who benefit which ultimately means we humans benefit. The weeds have begun to take over our gardens keeping the important plants and bushes from doing what they need to do. Tomorrow Division 1 along with our grade 3 buddy class will head out to do some gardening. Learning about why this is important and how to go about doing this is a great learning activity for all the students.
1)Lit Circles - combined journal feedback time tomorrow - be ready with your journal at least partially written so that you can benefit from this time
2) Bring gardening tools such as gloves and spades
3) Respond to today's comment below
Riddle: I am a four letter word, I can be seen in the sky, I am the ocean and sea. What am I?
answer to Wednesday: the castle's shadow
Comment: Today it was asked what the benefit of a wasp is. That is a great question. We all have little critters that we wonder what their contribution to an ecosystem is. What is one that you wonder about and look up what it does to create a healthy ecosystem. Mine is earwigs. Even though they eat holes in my plant leaves I just found out that they eat aphids - yeah. Aphids really destroy some of my flowers especially my roses. Hum, I wonder what an aphid contributes? One question always leads to another.
I am a grade 7 teacher who has been teaching in the Surrey School District for over 28 years. I love to read, garden, walk, and spend time with family, friends and my golden retriever Kona.
